i.MX6 Background

The market for intelligent, multimedia focused, touch-based devices is increasing exponentially. Tomorrow's battery-powered smart devices, auto/in-flight entertainment and information systems, medical systems, personal and enterprise control and data systems, and new classes of devices never before seen need to present data and user interface choices to the end user primarily through enhanced quality sound, video, voice, pictures and touch, rather than keyboards and mice. The i.MX range is a family of Freescale Semiconductor proprietary microprocessors for multimedia applications based on the ARM architecture and focused on low-power consumption. The i.MX application processors are SoC (System-on-Chip), which integrates many processing units into one, like the main CPU, a video processing unit and a graphics processing unit for instance. The i.MX products are qualified for automotive, industrial, and consumer markets. The i.MX6x series is the latest addition to the Freescale i.MX portfolio, based on the ARM Cortex A9 solo, dual or quad cores. With high-performance multimedia processing, software compatible product families and integrated power management, the i.MX 6 series is purpose built for the new era of smart devices.
